ANNE THE FLORIST

Meet Anne the Florist

The following are simplified examples to illustrate how missed calls, missing website chat, outdated websites and similar issues can impact a business.

Anne is a local florist and she runs her own small flower shop.

She’s good at what she does, has loyal customers, and gets a steady flow of enquiries.

Like many business owners, she’s busy running the day-to-day, serving customers, handling deliveries, and keeping everything moving.

From the outside, everything looks fine.

But when we take a closer look, a few small things start to stand out.

👉 Not big problems
👉 Not anything unusual
👉 Just small gaps

And that’s where money quietly slips away

Leaks in the pipeline, you might call it, the kind most businesses don’t even notice, but together they add up to substantial losses.

Here's how an interview with Anne went:

How Small Lost Opportunities Add Up

Missed Calls

Hard Numbers
_____________________________
“So Anne, let's explore how much you're losing in lost opportunities. First question: What is your average order size?”
“About £50–£60.”

“Okay. As a percentage, how many of your calls are converted into sales?”
“I'd say around 75% because most are looking to buy, but of course there are always some that don't and some calls are just enquiries."

“Right. So how many calls do you think you miss in a typical working day? and how many leave a voice message?”
“Probably around 5 or 6. If I’m out delivering or helping a customer, I can’t always pick up. And as for leaving a message, next to none do, I'd say.”

“Got it. And outside opening hours?”
“Yeah, quite a few. Evenings, weekends… I’m closed, so I don’t answer those. I'd guess a few each day, maybe 4-6.”

"Okay. Let's recap and keep it conservative.

5 missed calls during the day and around 4 more outside opening hours.
T
hat's 50+ missed calls every week."

And with a conversion rate of 75% you're missing out on roughly £2,000 of extra orders every week, or around
£8,000 every month

Most of this goes straight to the next business who actually picks up the phone first time someone calls. They don't call back or leave a message, they just quietly disappear from you.

👉 That’s what missed calls actually cost.
👉 Most businesses never realise this.

Conversion Loss
_____________________________
“Let’s take your website for a moment, Anne.

Roughly how many visitors do you get in a month?”

“Last time I checked it was an average of around 500 a month”

“Got it. How many of those actually reach out or enquire?”
“Not that many - maybe 10 or 15.”

“So around 2–3% take action?”
“Yeah, I didn't do the maths, but that sounds about right.”

“Well that also means that 97% leave without doing anything.”
“…when you put it like that, yeah I guess so.”

“And if just a few more of those visitors engaged before leaving — asked a question, got a quick answer - do you think more would convert?”
“Absolutely, yes.”

“Let’s keep it simple. If just 10 extra people per month turned into customers…”
“With an average job of, say, £60…”

“That’s £600 extra per month from the exact same traffic.”

👉 Without more ads, more SEO or more effort.
👉 Just capturing more of the visitors you already have.

First Impressions
_____________________________
“Anne, honestly, when someone lands on your website, what do you think their first impression is?”
“I think it’s okay. It might be a bit outdated though. It was made some years ago.”

“And how long do you think they stay before deciding?”
“Probably just a few seconds.”

"You're right, people decide whether to stay or leave in only a few seconds. So in those few seconds, they decide whether to trust you or move on, right?”
“Yeah, I suppose so.”

“If your website doesn’t clearly show what you do, how to contact you, or why to choose you, what do you tyhink their verdict will be?”
“They might just leave.”

“And try the next business instead, yes?”
“…yes.”

“If even 1 in 10 visitors leave because of that…”
“Right, I can see that. If I get 500 visitors a month, then…”

“That’s right, 50 potential customers lost before they even consider contacting you, and £3,000 lost in revenue.”

👉 Most businesses don’t realise how much that first impression matters
👉 Because they never see the ones who leave.”

No Review Management

Trust and Credibility
_____________________________
“When you search for a business yourself Anne, and consider buying from them, what do you usually look at as one of the first things?”
“Reviews, definitely.”

“And if one business has 80 reviews and another has only 8?”
“I’d probably choose the one with more.”

“Even if both are equally good?”
“Yeah… it just feels safer.”

“Okay, and most look at Google reviews, agree? So how many reviews does your business currently have on Google?”
“Not that many… maybe 10–15.”

“And do you consistently ask customers to leave one?”
“Not really.”

“So even if you do great work, you might look less trustworthy than competitors who simply ask more often.”
“…yeah, I can see that.”

“If that causes just a few customers each week to choose someone else…”
“That adds up quickly over time, I get it.”

👉 And most of it happens before they ever even contact you.
👉 And you're none the wiser.

Visibility and Perception
_____________________________
“When someone searches for your service locally, do you usually show up?”
“Sometimes… depends.”

“And when you do show up — does your profile clearly stand out?”
“Not really sure.”

“Photos, reviews, description, services, are they fully up to date?”
“Probably not.”

“So if a customer sees 3–4 businesses, and one looks more complete, more active, more trustworthy?”
“They’ll likely choose that one…yeah I see it.”

“Even if you’re just as good — or better.”
“Exactly.”

👉 Visibility alone isn’t enough,  it’s how you show up that matters.

👉 Small differences decide who gets the call.
Even small leaks add up - and fixing them can make a significant difference.
In Anne's case, easily £10-15,000 a month
